Lactic acid is produced during workouts and the level normally depends on the intensity, volume and type of physical activity. The accumulation of lactic acid in the muscle makes people feel sore after exercising. It is what causes the burning sensation in the muscles during an intense physical activity and usually goes away after an adequate recovery break. For untrained the accumulation of lactic acids is higher than for more advanced individuals. Additionally, lactic acid increase is higher in endurance exercises such as running marathon, or cross country cycling.

So how can you get rid of lactic acid or recover faster after exercising?

1 Take sufficient recovery breaks during and following fitness workout

Accumulation of fatigue significantly affects fitness performance regardless of the fitness workout you are involved in. Since fatigue is as a result of the production of lactic acid in the muscles during workouts, it is important to allocate enough recovery time for the muscles to get rid of this waste product. This means both during and after fitness workouts. It is important to note that recovery break does not mean doing nothing. Research reveals that muscles get rid of lactic acid quicker during active recovery than during a complete rest. That is why it is critical to cool down after a hard fitness training for example fast running or heavy weight lifting. Cross training can come handy in some cases.

2 Good balanced food and supplements

This goes without saying; your body requires energy to function normally. Muscle uses calories to produce force which is what happens during any physical activity. The more work you do, the more calories you will need. It is also crucial to take any vital supplements besides the food. For instance if you are in heavy strength resistance training, your muscles will require more protein than what may be available in the food you eat for quicker recovery. Remember that protein is required both for energy and for repairing the damaged muscle cells and tissue.

3 Good hydration

This should be common sense as well; your body requires water to be functional. But, for high volume fitness training, it may be necessary to replace electrolytes by drinking sports drinks as well. Electrolytes are necessary help the body retain more water and make your muscles recover quicker.Please stay away from energy drinks with caffeine in them, they dehydrate the muscles!

4 Get enough sleep

Good sleep is as significant in fitness recovery as food. Lack of enough sleep increases sourness in the muscles and eventually affect fitness training and performance. It is advisable to get at least 8 hours of deep sleep for better and faster fitness recovery.

5 Follow a good exercise program

Fitness training plan is often overlooked by most people engaging in physical workout. Lack of well designed training plan is the reason behind several fitness related injuries. Most people begin running or lifting weights just because others are doing it, but have no idea what they are doing. If you are using running for example marathon as your fitness physical activity, find or let your coach help you to design a good plan to follow. I am using marathon training because it is the most demanding popular fitness activity that most people jump into without a program. Marathon being a heavy endurance physical activity is also associated with the highest production of lactic acid.
